Planning a Golf Trip to Ireland from the US: Basing Yourself at Royal County Down

Most American golf trips to Ireland move hotel every two nights. Basing your group five minutes from Royal County Down works out better, and cheaper.

Most American golf trips to Ireland are built the same way. A coach, a new hotel every two nights, and a lot of the week spent looking at the back of a driver's head. It works, but you spend more time travelling than playing, and by Thursday nobody can remember which town they woke up in.

There is another way to do it, particularly if your group runs from eight to twenty-three: pick one base, stay put, and drive out to the courses.

The Briers is five minutes from Royal County Down. This is a guide to building a trip around that.

Why Royal County Down is worth building a trip around

Royal County Down is consistently ranked at or near the top of world course lists. It runs between the Mourne Mountains and the Irish Sea on the edge of Newcastle, and it has hosted the Irish Open five times, most recently in 2024 when Rasmus Højgaard denied Rory McIlroy by a single shot in front of a home crowd.

It is a genuine links: blind tee shots, gorse, deep pot bunkers and wind that turns a 7,206-yard par 71 into something considerably longer. Americans used to target golf tend to find the fourth and ninth holes stay with them for years.

Practical note that catches people out: visitor tee times are limited and book a long way ahead, particularly May through September. Start with the date you want at Royal County Down and build everything else around it, not the other way round.

What else is within reach

Staying put in Newcastle puts a serious amount of links golf inside a comfortable drive.

Royal Portrush is about two hours north, on the Antrim coast. It hosted The Open in 2019, when Shane Lowry won, and again in 2025, when Scottie Scheffler took the Claret Jug by four shots. It is a long day out but most groups think it is worth it.

Ardglass is thirty minutes away and has one of the most dramatic opening stretches in Irish golf, played along the cliffs.

Kilkeel and Warrenpoint are both close, both good, and both a fraction of the green fee at the championship courses. Useful for the day after a heavy night.

A workable week looks like: arrive and play something local to shake off the flight, Royal County Down mid-week when you have your legs, the drive to Portrush as a set-piece day, and one or two of the smaller courses to fill in around them.

Why one base beats a moving tour

Unpack once. That is most of the argument.

Beyond that, the practical differences add up. Nobody is on a coach schedule, so if four of you want to play thirty-six and the rest want a lie-in, that works. And there is a licensed private bar that you stock yourselves, which across a week for a group this size is a substantial saving over hotel bar prices.

The dining room sits open to the bar, which is where the post-round arguments about who actually won the match get settled.

The house

Nine bedrooms, every one en suite, sleeping up to twenty-three. That last detail matters more on a golf trip than people expect — nobody is sharing a bathroom, and nobody draws the short straw on a rollaway bed.

Rooms one and two have walk-in showers, eight and nine have showers, and three to seven have baths. Two hot tubs and a barrel sauna in an acre of grounds, which earn their keep after thirty-six holes into the wind. A snug off the bar with a fire and a TV, and WiFi throughout for anyone who has to check in with the office.

The whole property is hired exclusively — no other guests, no shared spaces. Dogs are welcome.

What it costs

£2,000 for a weekend for the whole house, which is from £43 per person per night with twenty-three sharing. Midweek is £700 a night for the house, subject to availability — around £30 a head at full occupancy.

Compare that against the same number of hotel rooms in Newcastle or Belfast for the same week and the difference is usually enough to cover a round somewhere good. Because it is priced per property, it also does not change if two of your group drop out three weeks before, which on a trip booked a year in advance is worth something.

Green fees are separate and paid to each club directly. Rates change, so check current pricing with the clubs rather than relying on figures in a blog post.

What we can arrange

Our golf concierge handles the logistics so your group turns up and plays. Tee times, transfers to and from the courses, caddies where clubs offer them, and catering through local partners.

Tell us your dates, your numbers and which courses matter most, and we will tell you honestly what is achievable. If Royal County Down is full for your week we would rather say so early than build a trip around a tee time that does not exist.

Practical notes for visiting Americans

Getting here. Dublin has the widest choice of direct flights from the US and is around ninety minutes' drive. Belfast International is closer, roughly an hour, with fewer direct options. Either works.

Driving. On the left, on roads that get narrow quickly once you leave the main routes. Most groups hire a minibus and nominate a driver, which also solves the question of who is not drinking.

Money and border. Northern Ireland uses pounds sterling; the Republic uses euro. If your itinerary crosses the border, carry both. There is no checkpoint — you will not notice the crossing.

Weather. Bring waterproofs regardless of season and forecast. A calm morning and a blustery afternoon are effectively two different golf courses here, and that is part of the appeal.

Walking. Irish links golf is largely walked rather than ridden. Caddies are widely available at the championship courses and worth taking — local knowledge on blind shots is worth more than the fee.

When to come. May to September gives the best weather and the longest days, and is also when tee times are hardest to get. April and October are quieter, cheaper and perfectly playable if your group does not mind a bit of wind.
